The Community Board 9 Manhattan is hosting a community conversation on large-scale development projects proposed for Hamilton Heights. The Hamilton Heights area is bounded by 125th to 155th, north to south, and Riverside to Edgecombe, more or less, east to west, and consists primarily of turn-of-the-century rowhouses and apartment buildings. There are two historic districts within the area, Hamilton Heights Historic District, 140th to 145th, and the Sugar Hill Historic District, north side of 145th to 155th, which encompasses 4 non-contiguous districts between Edgecombe and the east side of Amsterdam.
Preservation of Hamilton Heights historic character has been an ongoing focus of the West Harlem Community Preservation Organization (“WHCPO”) since late 1990s. Sponsors of the existing historic districts, the organization is presently conducting a West Harlem Survey for submission to the State for National Register Listing.
Community residents are encouraged to join the conversation and voice their opinion on December 29th. We hope you will add your voice to the WHCPO’s advocacy for a liveable community and the preservation of neighborhood character and reject out-of-scale developments that negatively impact the community.
If you would like to join the CPO’s advocacy efforts, please email: info@westharlemcpo.org to learn more.
